MESA

Commissioning Nature-Inspired Artwork

Role: Art Director/ Motion Design Director

About

Volvoxlabs was commissioned to create a nature-inspired moving image artwork for the new city of Mesa, officially opened in 2025. The artwork was divided into three subthemes: Ecosystem, Landscape and River. We explored various techniques to develop a series of awe-inspiring motion design pieces. The final result is a collection of twelve 12-minute video loops, blending traditional motion design workflows with newly developed AI-generated graphics.

The Ecosystem

Inspired by the native plant ecosystems surrounding Mesa, we imagined how these living organisms might evolve over time.

Leveraging the latest AI generative tools, we were able to glimpse into a speculative future—envisioning surreal yet familiar transformations of cacti and flowers. The result is a visually striking collection of macro-detail shots and wide-angle landscapes that blend the natural with the otherworldly.

The Landscape

Mesa’s distinctive landscape has long captivated travelers, especially when viewed from above. Using actual heightfield data from the region surrounding the city, we visualized how the geography might transform over an expansive timespan—blending scientific accuracy with imaginative interpretation.

The River

Like the Landscape, the passage of time led us to explore how bodies of water shape and transform the land. Using real mathematical formular, we modeled the potential evolution of the river over time.

The result is a fascinating animation that brings the river to life—dynamic, ever-changing, and deeply connected to the surrounding terrain
